Wesley is the biggest private hospital in Australia owned by the Uniting Church. They made a strategic decision to go into the emergency medicine market in the early 90’s and spent some time looking around at successful and non-successful projects. The Board decided to use a consulting group to minimise risks and Impact won the selection process against a couple of other companies.
The contract was a three year process to:
Design the unit
Assist with supervision of the building
Commissioning of the unit
Hiring and training of all staff
Marketing and launch.
Following this the unit was opened and settled down and handed over to the hospital in a fully functioning form. The unit grew strongly and the hospital has had to extend its beds to cope. The marketing program that was specific and niche in style was designed to get optimum casemix without too much outpatient load. The admission rate is extremely high as a result. The emergency centre is run on contract to doctors medical companies on a fee for service model. The centre provides a very strong casemix driver particularly cardiology.
